Slaloming Down Stradun

Most people don’t realize that while the old town of Dubrovnik is quite small, navigating the pedestrian-only main street, Stradun, can take anywhere from three minutes to seven hours. The street is only about 300 meters long.  If you are on Stradun the diversions are apparent,  yet still, doing the three minute tour is difficult to accomplish.

You have to treat Stradun like ski slope.

The first step is to take a minute at the top of Stradun to survey the situation. The main impediment is the crowds.  (It has become a local pastime to complain about the crowds. Either too many crowds are ruining the ambiance or a lack of crowds is ruining business.)

The second step is to make sure that your sunglasses are securely on and that you have something in your hand, preferably a cell phone so you can pretend to be reading a text in order to avoid unwanted eye contact.

Some of the more stationary hazards such as cafes, the ice cream shop,  and the large water fountain are pretty easy to avoid if you have the willpower to resist the temptation. However, be warned that there are certain obstacles that can appear out of nowhere and you must be prepared to turn as quickly as possible if you have any chance of making it to the end of the street.

Some of the obstacles you may have to slalom around are:

1) Groups of tourists that stop at every corner to take pictures of every side street.

2) Children (and adults, for that matter) who stop in order to deal with their melting ice cream cone.

3) People posing for pictures.

4) Pigeons.

5) Really pretty things for sale in the windows.

6) Running into people whom you met the night before and may or may not want to see.

The third step is just take a deep breath and walk as fast as you can. Because, in the end, it doesn’t really matter because everyone else there is on Mediterranean time, too.
