A Midwestern Girl -or- A Long-Awaited Trip
In one week I will be on the road again (or in the air again, technically). It’s been a while since I’ve traveled, but it’s not a bite from the travel bug that has prompted this trip. Nor am I headed to some posh hotel on a business trip. And I’m certainly not headed to any exotic locale. Yet I’m more excited about this trip than any I’ve been on in a long time. I’m going home.
It’s been quite a while since I spent any significant amount of time back home in Ohio. Though the forests have been stripped bare of leaves and the green fields have turned to a collage of browns, it’s still beautiful to me.
According to news from the parents, there has been a layer of snow on the ground for weeks now, which is more than I can say for this Boston “winter.”
My travel itinerary is simple and flexible. There are just a few things that must be fit in. Watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation while eating mounds of Chex mix is near the top of the list. I will also drive around on the back roads somewhat recklessly while listening to something midwestern like Tom Petty. I will take a chilly walk with my father through a nearby state park and skip stones across the icy lake to hear that strange echoing sound it makes. And despite the cold, I will stand outside at night with my neck craned up to see the stars that shine brighter there, free from the city lights. Yes, Ohio, home, here I come.

And not only does she read books from around the world, she also samples beers in as many languages as possible. Favorite style: the multi-national American Double IPA.

Ohio looks forward to seeing you.
