Rediscovering Boston
I have been a Boston resident now for almost four years. I like to think that I know the city fairly well, and have seen a decent portion of what there is to see. This was true for the most part until the other night.
It was towards the end of the evening when I was working when I happened across a particular book in our Boston section. The Museums of Boston it is called, and boy did it throw me for a loop. I have been missing out completely! …Did you know that there is a Museum of Dirt, and a Museum of Bad Art?
Let me give you a little background information here. My parents, my father especially, love to go to what you could call “educational/interesting engineering marvels” whenever we go some place, which are off the beaten path severely. The worst part was that my father never told us we were going at all. The usual trip from Connecticut to Philadelphia to visit family always had a two hour detour on the way home to see the Roebling Aqueduct, or a Frank Lloyd Wright house. So naturally I have an eye for some exhibit somewhere that might satisfy my need for obscure knowledge. At the time I hated those detours, but now I appreciate them and realize that I actually want to go to these museums and weird engineering feats.
This leads me to a lot of confusion. How could I have lived in Boston for almost four years and not know that there was a Museum of Dirt? How could I have taken my parents around Boston when they came to visit and not even tell them about these amazing things that this city I live in has to offer? Well I don’t know…and next time I can guarantee you that I am skipping right over the MFA and the JFK Library and going straight to the Museum of Dirt, followed quickly with the Boston Beer Museum or the Pioneer Telephone Museum.
I am very excited about the new things my city has to show me. This is going to be a great summer for me with all the new museums. And now I can take my parents on a fifty minute T detour to see a bunch of dirt.
