“Cock of the Walk”
During the month of April we both took time off from work. It was one of those rare spring days when the weather actually cooperated…that is to say it was warm and sunny. Nice! Mossik and I took Route 24 south to Rhode Island where instead of heading toward Newport we chose the road not usually taken–to Tiverton and Little Compton. There we discovered gentle rolling hillocks hugging the coastal area dotted with handsome colonial architecture, quaint townships, and still straw-hued fields just beginning to hint at the bounties that the summer would yield. Mossik, who always has to be in touch with his work, had to make a conference call during which he mentioned our whereabouts to his colleagues. One of them was familiar with this area and suggested we seek out the Sakonnet Vineyards and Winery. (Although I work in the travel bookstore I hadn’t consulted any of the guidebooks so we appreciated Kathleen’s suggestion). At the furthest point of the peninsula where the land abruptly meets the sea we asked a stroller for directions to the vineyard and discovered, to our delight, an amazing natural resource in our southeastern New England area for wines of unique flavor and blend. After sampling several wines and feeling quite dreamy and relaxed it was not too difficult to purchase several bottles of wine including the winery’s “Cock of the Walk,” red and white varietals. Upon returning to work the next week and wanting to know more about this charming area, I found excellent information in the Rhode Island An Explorer’s Guide and in the Rhode Island Moon Handbook which will no doubt be very useful when we plan a return visit. Next time we’ll tote our bikes and coast down those gentle slopes to see what the pale fields will have offered the summer season.
